Preparedness is a Way of Life: Hiking

Here are some tips for hiking safely and being prepared for emergencies:

  • Plan: Check the weather forecast and be flexible with your itinerary. If there are warnings about inclement weather, you may need to change your route.

  • Bring essentials: Pack a map, compass, sunglasses, hat, sunscreen, flashlight, waterproof matches, first aid kit, water, water-purifying tablets, and extra clothing.

  • Stay alert: Pay attention to the weather and be aware of any alerts. If storms are approaching, you may want to turn back.

  • Stick to the trail: Staying on marked trails reduces the risk of getting lost.

  • Hike with others: You're safer in a group, especially if something unexpected happens.

  • Tell someone where you're going: Let someone know where you're going and when you're expected to return.

  • Be aware of your surroundings: During an earthquake, try to get away from cliffs and rocky formations. Look out for potential hazards like boulders that could fall.

  • Wear appropriate clothing: Wear layers of non-cotton clothing that can wick moisture. Temperatures can change quickly, especially if you gain elevation. For every 1,000 feet of elevation gain, the temperature often drops three to five degrees.

  • Bring a water filter: A water filter can quickly and easily provide safe drinking water.
