Preparedness is a Way of Life: Hiking
Here are some tips for hiking safely and being prepared for emergencies:
Plan: Check the weather forecast and be flexible with your itinerary. If there are warnings about inclement weather, you may need to change your route.
Bring essentials: Pack a map, compass, sunglasses, hat, sunscreen, flashlight, waterproof matches, first aid kit, water, water-purifying tablets, and extra clothing.
Stay alert: Pay attention to the weather and be aware of any alerts. If storms are approaching, you may want to turn back.
Stick to the trail: Staying on marked trails reduces the risk of getting lost.
Hike with others: You're safer in a group, especially if something unexpected happens.
Tell someone where you're going: Let someone know where you're going and when you're expected to return.
Be aware of your surroundings: During an earthquake, try to get away from cliffs and rocky formations. Look out for potential hazards like boulders that could fall.
Wear appropriate clothing: Wear layers of non-cotton clothing that can wick moisture. Temperatures can change quickly, especially if you gain elevation. For every 1,000 feet of elevation gain, the temperature often drops three to five degrees.
Bring a water filter: A water filter can quickly and easily provide safe drinking water.
